You've worked in very many situations and you've done
many records with quintet, big band, strings, and many different projects. Is there
something you have in mind you would like to do and you haven't done yet?
I'd like to do a Brazilian project maybe sometime, and probably something more
contemporary, with electronics, computers, you know…
Among the very many projects
you've done, which is the one that is mostly in your heart…. The one you're most
I can't really say there's one in particular, they all are pretty special to
me. They are like children. I love them all in the same way.
You play almost every evening, so you are constantly
playing. But do you also devote much time during the day to studying?
I'm studying always, even when I'm playing….
What I really mean is: do you have a routine where you
study a number of hours?
No, I wouldn't say I have a routine at all. It's a constant thing, even when
I'm not playing. I'm always reading about music, trying to develop my mind so that
I can be more creative. Being very spiritual is also important to me. I just… pray
a lot and just try to keep myself together so that I can make music….
I do realize this is very important, especially for
an artist, to be open and spiritual, because you're more open when you're spiritual….
And what about travelling so much? You're travelling
all the time….
I don't like to travel that much, but I'm always in the airport, and back and
forth in buses and trains. I have to say I don't like flying that much anymore.
It's kind of difficult now with all the security and strangeness in the airport.
But…. You know, it's worth it once we get here. People are here to enjoy the music.
That's the fun part for me. All the travelling is worth it for them.
When you're playing, what do you like to leave your
audience with once the concert is over?
I just want them to feel happy, and forget about the troubles that they have
in their life, you know? I think that's really what it's all about for me. If the
people aren't extremely happy after the show then I feel like I didn't do my job
Where are you going to go next on tour?
Right now we're going to go to Spain after we leave here for a couple of days,
and then we're going back to New York and off for the rest of April. We'll come
back to Europe in May.
Thank you very much for your time and for the interview.
We wish you all the very best for all your projects, and hope to see you soon back
in Milano. Do you listen to music or do you mainly work on your music?
I listen to a lot of music apart from working on my music. Every musician should.
