Lil Darling, name at birth Liliana
di Marco, begins her activity at the age of 20 as prose actress and
operetta singer in semiprofessional companies. This experience lasted about five
years and at the same time she began to go in for remarkable singing gifts for jazz
singing till when, some years ago during an important meeting with the famous singer
Dee Dee Bridgewater
was encouraged to go on with jazz. Lil breaks off the theatrical performances to
apply herself completely to Afro-American music.
She studies lyric singing with Annamaria Dalla Molla and Paola
Belletti and perfects herself with Susanna Ghione. She dedicates to further
studies to perfect herself in jazz singing as student of Francesca Oliveri
(at Centro Jazz in Turin). She improves her jazz style accompanied by musicians
among the most skilled ones on Italian scene such as pianists
Riccardo Zegna
and Palmino Pia. In August 2002 she attends
several stages dedicated to performance in musical theatre directed by Anne-Marie
Speed. She perfects herself in EVTS (Voicecraft) singing technique with Loretta
Martinez and Elisa Turlà.
Endowed with a voice which is deep, aggressive and soft at the same time
and with remarkable range, within a repertory of more than 200 songs, changes with
easy manners from atmospheres of swing of 40s to the most mordant blues.
In 1992 founds the
Lil Darling Hot Club, jazz
group composed by six elements whose genre consists in "hot" jazz interpretation
of songs of the 30s and 40s making up some songs belonging to golden age of Cole
Porter, Rodgers and Hart, Duke Ellington, etc. (a great majority of them became
"standards" and was replayed in modern jazz) and performing them as swing/mainstream
songs as they were originally. Main insipiring elements are singers such as Sarah
Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Dinah Washington, and musicians such as
Lionel Hampton,
Benny Goodman, etc.
The Lil Darling Hot Club played at all main Italian jazz-clubs among the others at
Cantina Bentivoglio in Bologna and at Alexander Platz in Rome. Participated at
Festival International du Jazz in Saint Raphael, at New Orleans Jazz Festival in
Oristano, at International
New Orleans Jazz Festival; played in Paris at jazz-clubs and hotels and at Festival
du Jazz in Vitré, France.
Since 1996 Lil Darling is present
on playbill of Teatro Regio in Turin with "All That Swing", review dedicated
to the mainstays of swing and jazz such as Cole Porter, Billie Holiday,
Louis Armstrong,
Richard Rodgers, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald and
Frank Sinatra,
etc. Since 2000 the review All That Swing is
successfully repeated at Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova too.
After third repeat performance at Piccolo Regio Theatre in Turin, during
summer 1998 it crossed the national frontiers
to reach Japan where it was performed with success in Tokio and Osaka in 15 repeat
performances.
Even if she dedicates herself to singing, Lil Darling doesn't leave
the world of theatre. In 2004 plays the main
role of Emily in theatrical piece "Piccola Città" written by Thorton Wilder and
produced by company "Vittorio Alfieri" and in 2003
plays the role of Norma Jean Baker (Marilyn Monroe) in musical "Bye Bye Marilyn",
