On a late summer night, Lee Konitz arrived at Iridium, on his bluesy alto sax, and his quartet blazed through this second set. Konitz began with Lester Young's "Pound Cake", celebrating Young's 101st birthday. Reid Anderson took the solo on bass from Konitz, and melodic, soft chords, with muffled sax and drums, followed. Charlie Parker's "Anthropology" was next, again sultry and mellow, casual and breezy, and its tune was sing-able and danceable. Ethan Iverson's piano chords backed up this solo.

Konitz walks the stage, glances at the crowd, then plays a solo, a cappella, as a pro. "I Remember You" was unhurried and dreamy, and he played with an approachable allure. Soon he was backed by his band again, and Anderson's solo expanded the theme. The music was blended, seamless, improvisational. Hints of Brubeck were embedded in the sax and bass theme. The next ballad was played with atonal refrains, led by Konitz with force and breathiness. Its atmospheric mood was even more interesting when the melody was turned inside out. Soon Konitz' quartet shifted the tempo, with the next song filled with Jorge Rossy's bright percussion. This music was rapid, yet understated, and sax and brushes introduced Ethan Iverson's piano theme. Bass and drums kept the rhythms prominent. Toward the end of the set, Rossy's son, Felix, 16 yrs. old, jammed on his brassy, searing trumpet, and the band gave him a nice showcase.

The trio in the second set, Gilad Barkan on piano, Jon Benitez on bass, and Harvey Wirht on drums, played acoustic, new age style, beginning with "A Bunch of Short Stories". It was smooth listening, with Barkan mostly in the lead. Check Iridium's Calendar for current and upcoming jazz.
