I "Buena Vista" del jazz, i fratelli Percy, Albert, Tootie sopra la soglia dei 70 anni, separatamente hanno suonato con i più grandi musicisti dell'era swing, be-bop e mainstream. Insieme rappresentano uno spaccato della storia della musica jazz dagli anni '40 ai '60.
autentiche "leggende viventi" del jazz moderno, si sono riuniti in un gruppo collettivo per dar sfogo alle luminose capacità individuali, ed evidenziare le loro doti di arrangiamento e composizione.
Percy Heath ha iniziato la sua carriera come violinista, per poi convertirsi al contrabbasso. Come bassista è uno dei fondatori del Modern Jazz Quartet, complesso col quale ha suonato, registrato e fatto tours per circa 22 anni. Ha suonato anche con molti dei grandi del Jazz, inclusi John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins
The
Heath Brothers have been contributing mightily to the language of jazz since the 1940s. Jimmy Heath, contemplating on the family legacy, remarked "We're lucky enough that all of us are still here. Among us, we've got more than 150 years of experience and more than 900 recordings. We've all played with the jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, J.J. Johnson, Miles and the Modern Jazz Quartet, that seems to make us the elders of the surviving families of Jazz."
Which, in typical Heath Brothers fashion, is a cool and modest understatement. These are jazz's elder statesmen who are swinging hard and having fun, gleeful in the fact that they can still make music together.
