Pdx Jazz @ The Mission Theater Presentss
A New Monthly Thursday Night Series to Showcase
National and International Artists
Tin Hat Set to Premiere May 19

"Forget the definitions, and simply think of the music of the Tin Hat Trio as compelling entertainment, rich with whimsy, imagination and intelligence." ~ The Los Angeles Times

PDX Jazz, the presenting organization of the Portland Jazz Festival in partnership with the Mission Theater is set to unveil monthly programing beginning Thursday, May 19 at 8pm with the San Francisco based Tin Hat.

The series will continue June 23 with the Norwegian based In The Country who previously played to a sold out audience at Norse Hall during the 2010 festival. In the Country is a trio consisting of pianist Morten Qvenild, bassist Roger Arntzen and drummer Pål Hausken. They have been selected best young jazz artists in Norway, played concerts in Europe and USA and released two albums on the Rune Grammofon label.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased in advance through Cascade Tickets or at the Crystal box office.
A limited number of premium reserved seats will be available to PDX Jazz members.
Additional ticketing information is listed at the bottom of this release.

Since Tin Hat's formation in 1997, original group members Carla Kihlstedt (violin), Rob Burger (accordion/piano), and Mark Orton (guitar) have expanded their trio by inviting special guests to join them on their recordings, among them such luminaries as Tom Waits and Willie Nelson, as well as luminescent friends like clarinetist Ben Goldberg and harpist Zeena Parkins. After Rob Burger left the group in late 2004, Goldberg became a permanent member. They are now also joined by newcomer Rob Reich on accordion and piano.

Their writing focuses on crafting evocative melodies, subtle textures and elegant arrangements. Though they never pitch their tent in any musical camp for very long, their atmospheric sound sways gracefully between the worlds of folk, classical and Americana among other genres.

Tin Hat recently played the Sundance Film Festival with Lou Reed and concluded a European tour. They are currently prepping material for a forthcoming album that is largely vocal with a handful of instrumental tracks based on the the wonderfully concise, bold and whimsical poetry of E. E. Cummings.

"The Mission Theatre is an optimum venue for us to further expand with the year-round programming of national and international artists," states PDX Jazz Artistic Director, Bill Royston. "Our festival audiences will now have the opportunity to experience world class jazz one Thursday each month with PDX Jazz @ The Mission, as well as one Saturday monthly with PDX Jazz @ Tony Starlight's. Touring jazz artists will now have an additional performance option in the Northwest, linking Vancouver/Seattle, the Bay Area and Southern California."

"We have enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with the Portland Jazz Festival since their inception as a presenting partner for numerous shows at the Crystal Ballroom,"states McMenamin's Director of Programming, Cory Wynne. "This new venture is a natural extension for us and we welcome this world class jazz series in our historic space. The Mission Theater in NW Portland was built as a church, with acoustics in mind, so hosting a nationally-focused jazz series is a harmonious fit and we're very excited about the partnership."

Tickets for shows ticketed by Cascade Tickets may be purchased at the Crystal box office or other McMenamins outlets
(Bagdad Theater, Edgefield, East 19th St. Café in Eugene)
by phone at 1-800-514-ETIX, or by clicking the "Buy Tickets" link located at the event listing on the McMenamins schedules.
